Many Greathouse descendants have completed their lines back to the original Greathouse settler in Philadelphia PA - Herman Groethausen - while others are still seeking their roots in America and still others are currently tying Herman's line back to Germany.
Most West Virginia Greathouses can trace their ancestry to the Greathouses of the northern Panhandle Counties - or - to the Greathouses of Monongalia and Preston County - or - to the Greathouses of Harrison County WV - or - to John Greathouse who was born about 1778 somewhere in VA and who married Sarah McDade in 1806 in Mason County VA.
John and Sarah McDade Greathouse and their children lived in the part of (W)VA that was part of different counties at different times - Mason, Kanawha, Jackson, Wirt and finally Roane County, WV where John died in 1866. He is buried in Spencer, Roane County, WV.
